Most folks who rent a dumpster want it sitting right in the driveway, close to the work. That's the easy part. The trickier part is making sure the size you pick actually fits the space you've got. Too big and the truck can't set it down clean. Too small and you're calling for a second pickup halfway through. Here's how to land on the right one.
Why the right size matters
Getting the size right saves you money and a headache. Rent something too big for a garage cleanout and you're paying for empty air. Rent something too small for a remodel and you're paying for extra hauls. And a dumpster that's wrong for the space can overload or sit awkward enough to scuff up your driveway. A little planning up front keeps all three from happening.
If you want the full lineup, our roll-off dumpsters page lays out every size we run and what each one fits.
What to think about before you book
A few things decide which dumpster is right for you. The size of your driveway. Whether your HOA has rules. The kind of project you're doing and how much junk it'll throw off. Run through those four and you'll know what to ask for.
Driveway size
If the dumpster's going on your driveway, it has to fit your driveway. A paved driveway usually needs to be at least about 10 feet long to work with. A typical single-car driveway runs around 10 feet wide, and a double-car one is closer to 20. Eyeball yours before you call so you're not guessing.
Measuring your driveway
You don't need to be precise to the inch, but a quick measure beats a surprise on delivery day. Here's the short version:
- Measure the width at the narrowest point, not the widest.
- Measure the length from the garage or street to where you actually want the dumpster sitting.
- Look up. Overhead wires and low branches stop a delivery faster than anything on the ground.
- Make sure the truck has room to pull in, drop the dumpster, and back out without clipping anything.
HOA rules
If you're in a deed-restricted community, check the rules before you book. Some HOAs are fine with a dumpster in the driveway for a week, some want it gone in a few days, and some make you keep it off the street entirely. Better to know now than to eat a violation fee later. Do your own homework, but you can also ask us. We work these neighborhoods all the time and usually know the lay of the land.
Project scale
A big job like gutting a kitchen needs more dumpster than clearing out a garage. If you go small to save a few bucks, just plan on a swap partway through so we can empty it and bring it back. Not sure what your project will throw off? Tell us what you're doing and we'll help you pick. We'd rather size it right the first time than watch you overpay. If you're not sure what's even allowed in the box, our what goes in a dumpster page covers it.
Common sizes and what they handle
Sizes vary by company. Here's how ours shake out for residential work:
- 7-yard ($324.99): small cleanouts, a single room, yard debris, the kind of job that fits easy in a single-car driveway.
- 15-yard ($349.99): mid-size stuff like a bathroom remodel or a single-room gut.
- 20-yard ($424.99): the big ones, whole-house cleanouts and kitchen renovations.
Every rental includes 2,000 lbs and 3 days, with up-front pricing so you know the number before we show up.
Making the most of the space
If your driveway's tight, a little strategy goes a long way:
- Pick the smallest size that still does the job. Less footprint, more room.
- Set the dumpster where you can get to it easily without blocking the cars you actually need.
- Pack it tight. Break down boxes and stack flat stuff so you're not wasting space.
- If the driveway just won't hold it, ask about placing it at the curb. Some spots allow it with a permit.
A few common questions
- What size fits a single-car driveway? A 7-yard fits most single-car driveways fine. Match the size to your project from there.
- How much room do I need? Plan on a dumpster a couple feet shorter than your driveway so we can set it down clean.
- Can it go on the street? Sometimes. Check your HOA and local rules and grab a permit if you need one before parking it at the curb.
- How long can I keep it? Our rentals include 3 days, and we can work with you if your project runs longer.
- How do I schedule? Call or book online and we'll get you on the calendar.
